A growing list of research and scientific studies demonstrate that chiropractic spinal adjustments are both safe and effective for a wide variety of conditions such as headaches and back pain to digestive disorders and reflux in babies.

Chiropractic is suitable for all ages from growing children to active seniors and it can be utilized over a lifetime. The evidence supports the greatest benefits are received with regular on-going care.

headache

Headaches

“Cervical spine manipulation was associated with significant improvement in headache outcomes in trials involving patients with neck pain and/or neck dysfunction and headache.”

Acute and Chronic Pain

“Acute and chronic chiropractic patients experienced better outcomes in pain, functional disability, and patient satisfaction; Clinically important differences in pain and disability improvement were found for chronic patients.”

Haas et al (2005), Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics.

Neck Pain

A neck adjustment when performed by a licensed chiropractor, is a precise procedure shown to improve joint mobility, restore range of motion and reduce muscle tension.

In a study funded by NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine to test the effectiveness of different approaches for treating mechanical neck pain, 57 percent of those who met with chiropractors reported at least a 75 percent reduction in pain after 12 weeks, compared to 33 percent of the people in the medication group.

Hypertension

On March 2, 2007 a landmark chiropractic study was published in the Journal of Hypertension. This study showed that precise chiropractic spinal adjustments were able to produce a reduction in both systolic (17mmHg) and diastolic (10mmHg) blood pressure that was sustainable over a 8 week period with “no adverse effects”.

posture

Posture

Chiropractic adjustments help to restore posture by improving motion and spinal integrity which improves afferent input into the spinal cord and brain, thus, allowing the body to comprehend and balance itself better in relation to gravity.

Studies have shown that even minor forward head posture was shown to be detrimental. From breathing and heart rate, to pain and disability, all health markers that were measured worsened as the posture deviations increased.

Pregnancy and Children

Chiropractic care has been shown to be safe and hugely beneficial for both mother and unborn children (1).  Adjustments for pregnant women have been shown to allow more comfort during pregnancy and birth for both mother and child.

The results of collaborative medical and chiropractic studies indicate that 75-85% of pregnant patients who received Chiropractic care during their pregnancies found pain relief and a significant decrease in the occurrence of “back labor”. (2) Studies have also shown that Chiropractic care significantly reduces labor times by 24% in first time mums and by 36% in second time mums (3).

Adjustments for children are different from those given to adults and are very gentle and safe to receive. A child will fall over approximately 2500 times before the age of three (4) so subluxations can easily build up in the spine and remain undetected until symptoms show later in life.

Studies among the Chiropractic profession have shown that the most commonly treated conditions a chiropractor sees a child for are for the following; respiratory disorders, ear/nose/throat issues, allergies, gastrointestinal complaint and for overall well-being (prevention care) (5).
